- There is a buzz stirring about the UK because of this event and if anyone feels underwhelmed, or not too excited about the British Pageant, then they have not grasped the concept and the power of this event.
The First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve have authorised the first official Church Pageant in Britain to take place from 31 July to 10 August 2013 in the grounds of the Preston Temple.
In the USA pageants are a big part of Latter-day Saint culture in the summer months, with annual events in Manti, Palmyra and Nauvoo. These events commemorate important events from Church history and the scriptures and have audiences of thousands each year.
The British Pageant is to follow the same format but with a focus on the history of the Church in the British Isles, written and performed by members from around the United Kingdom. Throughout their history, the British people have demonstrated their desire to do God’s will, requiring personal sacrifice and tremendous courage. This pageant will tell the story of Latter-day Saints who have sacrificed much to build their faith, and to strengthen their communities. Through their abiding faith and deep love for one another and the Saviour, the Saints discovered their lives were full of the joy of the gospel. They taught their children and these youth carried on a legacy of devotion to the principles of the restored Gospel which is manifest throughout the world-wide church. Today, families and youth in the British Isles know this joy and continue to take it to all the world. The pageant will explore events surrounding the beginning of the Church and the impact of these events through the years in the British Isles.
The script and music has been specially written to reflect the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout “This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle...This other Eden... This precious stone set in the silver sea”. Many have expressed an interest in travelling to be in the audience from all over the UK, with enquiries from beyond our shores.
The organising of this event is moving along rapidly. After travelling around the British Isles the Pageant artistic team selected a group of around eighty people to attend the final audition. Those auditioning travelled from throughout Britain. The day proved to be a wonderful spiritual experience for all involved as they read from the script taken from actual journals and letters of early British Saints.
One sister taking part in the final audition commented, “The spirit was there in abundance taking some by surprise. I am asking in my prayers to be able to participate; that to me, would be such a wonderful blessing.” A young man wrote, “After a long day of reading, acting and singing but more importantly a day of testimonies, spiritual experiences and love, we all headed home feeling happy, content and excited.”
A young man has captured the spirit of the Pageant in these words, “There is a buzz stirring about the UK because of this event and if anyone feels underwhelmed, or not too excited about the British Pageant, then they have not grasped the concept and the power of this event.”
