Church Reaffirms Position on Same-Sex Marriage

  • 11 August 2010

The Church reaffirmed their position on same-sex marriage after a ruling in California that overturned Proposition 8

“Marriage between a man and a woman is the bedrock of society,” reads an official  statement by the Church, which can be read in full on the Church’s Newsroom Web site.

“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints regrets today’s decision.  California voters have twice been given the opportunity to vote on the definition of marriage in their state and both times have determined that marriage should be recognized as only between a man and a woman. We agree.”

Proposition 8, passed in November 2008 following a statewide vote in California, declared that “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”
