More than 1,000 Homes Lost in Texas Fires
More than 1,000 homes have been destroyed by wildfires in Texas, USA, since the beginning of the fire season, including 20 homes belonging to Church members. Dozens of wildfires have burned more than 115,000 acres (46,000 ha) over the past week.
The fires are responsible for at least two deaths. More than 700 of those homes have been destroyed since September 5. At least 60 other families in various areas have been forced to evacuate.
No Church property has been reported damaged, but the Bastrop meetinghouse in Bastrop County (near Austin), where the fire is largest, continues to be threatened by flames.
Many of the blazes continue to burn with little or no containment, with flames having been fueled by winds from Tropical Storm Lee.
Local priesthood leaders are attending to the needs of the families who have been displaced and are evaluating opportunities for providing community assistance.
