About 75 Mormon men were hired in Omaha to help finish construction of a transcontinental telegraph line between Fort Kearny and Salt Lake. They were part of a workforce totaling 400 men. Those extending the line westward met the crew constructing the line eastward from Salt Lake on 17 October when the telegraph line was joined.
