Philip Leaning Oil on canvas, 2002
This painting is about the death of Joseph Smith. As his lifeless body lies at the feet of the seemingly triumphant mob, unseen by them Joseph's father comes to call him from his labour and take him home to his Father in Heaven. It is also about my feelings for the Prophet, about the love the Lord had for him, and the loving way he could have been taken home. It also presents the fact that even when evil seems dominant, the Lord's purposes go serenely on, and there can be beauty amidst darkness. Depicted along the top and bottom are key things in Joseph's ministry: the gold plates, the Hill Cumorah, the Sacred Grove, the Susquehanna River, and the Kirtland and Nauvoo Temples. |
