Women of God, Joan Merrell Women of God

Joan Merrell
Gouache, acrylic, ink on canvas, 2002

In her painting, the artist has used several texts, "The Family: A Proclamation to the World," declarations by the Relief Society, and quotations from several Church Presidents and women's leaders. All are teachings that help women become women of God. Words are layered to symbolize these principles being woven into our lives, and some require the viewer to come close and study the artwork. The colors and patterns represent premortal and earth life moving upward to eternal life. The light of truth is also represented by the light coming out of the darkness.
