Robert Barrett Oil on panel, 2002
The subject of this artwork is the mob who with blackened faces stormed the Carthage Jail on 27 June 1844. The artist felt moved by the subject after his family had the opportunity to attend the dedication of the Nauvoo Temple and hear President Hinckley talk about the significance of the day and hour of the first dedicatory service. He mentioned that Church leaders had fixed the time of the first service to coincide with the hour that Joseph and Hyrum were martyred in Carthage. |
