Jill Cecil Watercolor on paper, 2002
The history of the Church has come full circle from the building of the first Nauvoo Temple to the dedication of the second. The artist has chosen to represent the temples by recreating photographic images of the two buildings. The work done in the temple is here suggested through the symbol of apples representing mortality and the fruit of which Adam and Eve partook. The butterflies stand for immortality and the eternal nature of the soul. The text is quoted from the journal of a pioneer leaving Nauvoo in 1846 and from a postcard received from a sister sent during her recent trip to Nauvoo. It is included to contrast the feeling of 1846 with today. |
