Doubting Thomas, Jeffrey Hein Doubting Thomas

Jeffrey Hein
Oil on canvas, 2002

The artist's focus is not on Thomas's feelings of doubt, but on his amazement and relief when he realized Christ had risen. The artist illustrated Christ's mercy to Thomas symbolically through a drop of Christ's atoning blood on Thomas's thumb. He also tried to portray the Savior and the Apostles as average–looking men. They must have been astonished and curious about Christ's Resurrection. If He were different in appearance than you and I, then why did so many overlook Him before seeing the scars on His hands and feet? Instead, the artist illustrates His greatness through the brilliance of His clothing and His stature.
