Robin Anderson Charcoal on paper, 2002
This drawing has transposed the biblical story of Job into a depiction of a man known by the artist who had polio as a boy and a heart pacemaker installed later in life. Like Job, he sits in an ash pit as a token of humility, his rent clothes symbolic of grief. Like the potter, God tests man to see if he is strong enough to be a vessel of God. Job was known as a great vessel, or servant of the Lord, who was later blessed even more. His test is great and he asks God, "Why?" While also bearing trials, the Prophet Joseph Smith was counseled by the Lord, “All these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good” (Doctrine and Covenants 122:7) |
