Lehi's Vision of the Tree of Life, Diane Aposhian–Moffat Lehi's Vision of the Tree of Life

Diane Aposhian–Moffat
Hand–knotted fabric, 2002

The artist's great grandparents were Armenian carpet makers living in Turkey. This rug was designed to honor their conversion to the Church and the trials encountered as they migrated to Utah. This work pictures Lehi's vision while also incorporating traditional elements from the rug pattern they brought with them. The center medallion represents the tree of life set in a field of blue surrounded by the fountain of living waters. Subsequent borders represent the iron rod, the river of filthy water and mists of darkness, and the spacious building. The central tree, done in vibrant greens, signifies love and contrasts with the building's garish colors that suggest worldly distractions preventing the finding of true love.
