Adele Cannon Howells

Primary President - 1943–1951

Adele Howells had served as May Hinckley's counselor in the general Primary presidency before her call as president at Sister Hinckley's death. During these years, she had also been editor of "The Children's Friend", making it much more child friendly, including the addition of the popular cut–out and color pages on heavier paper. As president, she continued her interest in "The Children's Friend". She commissioned Arnold Friberg to create his now famous series of Book of Mormon paintings which first appeared in "The Children's Friend" in 1953. She also encouraged children to donate to the "This is the Place Monument" in honor of the Mormon Pioneer centennial in 1947 and to contribute dimes to buy bricks for the new Primary Children's Hospital which she announced in 1949. Sister Howells died in 1951 while still serving as general Primary president.
