General Site Layout and Functionality
Breadcrumb Trail
The Breadcrumb Trail provides easy access back to previously visited pages.
To return to a page, click on an item in the breadcrumb trail.
Content Area
The content area on each page contains information, links or the names of
songs to jump to or download, depending on which page is displayed.
Menus
As you move the cursor over one of the menu titles at the top of the
page---Music, Resources, and Learning Materials---a menu showing the options
available will be displayed. Click on one of the options to go to that page.
Toolbar
The toolbar features important functional and informational pages useful
throughout the site. The features on the toolbar include Feedback, Site Map,
and Help.
Feedback
Use the Feedback page to report technical problems with the site, as well as to
share your ideas about how to improve the site. Your comments will be considered, but it is not possible to send a reply to each comment.
Site Map
The Site Map provides an overview of all main pages. To go to any page, click
on the link.
Help
This Help page provides a quick reference to the functions and
features of this site.
Interactive Church Music Player
About This Song
This feature provides the author of the words and composer of the music, the tune,
meter, topics under which the music is listed, scriptures related to the song, and copyright
information.
Auto Scroll---On or Off
To have the music automatically scroll on the page, select Auto Scroll On. If
you want to move up and down on the page yourself, select Auto Scroll Off.
Download or Print
You can choose to download an MP3 of the displayed song with
words and words or with music only. You can also choose to print sheet
music for the displayed song.
Key
You can change the key of the song and then have the song played in the new key.
Music Display Area
This is where the selected music is displayed.
Music Parts / Volume
When you have selected Music with Parts, you can choose the notes of the singing parts you want to hear and move the
slider bar to set the volume for each part. Then press the Play button at the
top of the screen. To turn a singing part off, click on the box next to the part. A singing part will be played when there is an X in the
box.

Click one of the buttons to control the music.
Search
Two kinds of searches are available.
Find a Song
Select whether you want
to search through All Music, Hymns, or the Children's Songbook. Then type
in a page number or word from a title or first line and press the Search button.
More Options
Type in a word, phrase, number, name, tune, or meter and press
the Search button.
Tempo
Use this feature to set the speed at which a song is played.
Specific Help
Accompanying Others
This feature provides helps for accompanying on a keyboard or another instrument.
Adding Variety to Singing
This feature provides helps for teaching singing to children.
Alphabetical Index---by First Lines and Titles
This index lists the first line and title of each hymn.
Authors and Composers Index
This index lists authors, composers, translators, adapters, and arrangers.
Asterisks (*) designate Latter-day Saints. Publishing sources are also listed if
information on originators is not available.
Browse an Index
You can browse through several indexes from Hymns and the Children's Songbook. These indexes will help you find a hymn or song to play or download.
Children's Songbook
This online version of the Children's Songbook has been provided to help you use children's songs more effectively in your home and Church meetings. You can search
for a song by entering a word or phrase in the search box, or you can select an index to search. (See below.) Note: Some songs are not be included because of
copyright restrictions.
Chord Chart
This feature shows guitar chords for the children's songs.
Church Music Submissions
The Church has established an annual submission of original Church music to encourage musical talent and to bring new musical works to light. Some submissions may be published in Church magazines. All items for the annual review must be
postmarked by March 31 of each year; award recipients will be notified by July 1.
Everyone who submits material will receive a list of the awards.
Conducting Course Book and Audiocassette Tapes
The Conducting Course presents a progressive method of learning basic conducting skills, using the hymns as examples. You begin by learning rhythms and beat patterns, with audio examples included for practice. You can download the entire book to display on
your computer or to print. As you review the materials on the pages, you can play
the audio examples to help you practice.

Copying Music
Use this feature to learn the Church's policies on copying music.>
Download a Song
Use this feature to browse a list of all hymns and children's songs available in MP3 format. To begin downloading a song, click the MP3 icon next to the song you want to
download or select the title to view the song. You can download the music and the words, or just the music.
Easy Hymns to Play
To help those who are learning to play the piano, this feature provides a list of hymns that are easier to play than other hymns.
Feedback
This feature provides a place for you to submit any comments you have about any
part of the Church music site

Use this feature to search for a song or hymn by typing a word or phrase from
the first line or title of the selection, or by entering the hymn number or song
page.

A message from the First Presidency, found at the front of the Hymnbook, provides guidance for using Church music in our daily lives.

Guidelines from the Church Handbook of Instructions help you
understand how to use music in Church settings.
Hymn Number Index
This index lists all the hymns in the order in which they appear in the hymnbook. A
few hymns are not included on this list because of copyright restrictions.

This online version of the Church's hymnbook has been provided to help you use Church
music more effectively in your home and Church meetings. You can search for a song by

Interactive Church Music Player
The Interactive Church Music Player allows you to view, listen to, transpose, and print the Church hymns and children's songs.Once you have selected a song and it is displayed, you can choose to listen to one or more of the singing parts and sing along as it plays. You can speed up or slow down the tempo, change to a higher or lower key, and even follow the tempo light as it flashes.
Interactive Conducting Course
Music directors help people sing together. They do this by showing the beat
of a hymn through arm movements that follow certain patterns. The Interactive Conducting Course can help you learn to conduct
music.
Learning Music Symbols and Terms
This list of symbols and terms that are used in music will help you understand how to read and understand printed music.
Meter Index
This index lists each hymn under its metrical heading so that hymn texts of
like meters can be matched with a variety of hymn tunes.
More Options
This feature provides advanced features that will help you narrow your search.
For example, you can search for words in a song or hymn, a particular meter,
a tune, or even a composer.
Music Materials
This list of music materials produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are available through the Online Distribution Center .
Music with Parts
When you select Music with Parts, all of the features are available for your use. When you choose to play the recordings by selecting the Words and Music or the Music option, the Music Parts/Volume, Tempo, and Key features are disabled.
Music Selections from Last Submissions
This feature provides access to selected songs submitted during the last Church Music
Submission. You can download and print the sheet music for each of these songs.
Online Distribution Center
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has an online Distribution
Center site, where you can purchase Church materials, including some music
materials for those with special needs.
Page Number / Hymn Number
In the Children's Songbook , each page has a number and there may be
two songs on a page. In the Hymnbook, each hymn, not each page, is numbered.
Printing
This feature allows you to print a song on a normal size sheet of paper.
Scriptures Index
This index lists the scriptural references found at the end of each hymn. It
is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of all scriptures relating to the
hymns. You can click on a scripture and you will be taken to the Church's
scriptures site. You will see the scripture displayed in its context.
Search
To search for a hymn or a children's song, type a word from the title of the hymn or song in the search box and press the Search button. If you want to search for
any song or hymn, select All Music. If you want to search only for hymns or only for children's songs, select that option from the list.
Simplifying Hymns
This feature provides information about making hymns easier to
play and learn.
Site Map
The Site Map provides an overview of all areas and features of the Church
music site. To go to a topic or feature shown in the Site Map, click on the
reference.
Special Needs
The Church provides a number of materials for those with disabilities. These
items are available for purchase in the Online Distribution Center.
Titles, Tunes, and Meters Index
This index lists the title of each hymn text, the name of the accompanying
hymn tune, and the meter.
Tempo
You can change the tempo of any song displayed in the Interactive Church
Music Player . You can slow down the song or speed it up to meet your
needs. The flashing light will flash red for the downbeat (the first beat of a
measure) and green for the remaining beats of the same measure.
Topics Index
The Topics Index lists hymns according to topic. It may be useful in locating
hymns suitable for a particular meeting, talk, or lesson.
Transpose
You can change the key of any song displayed in the Interactive Church Music
Player. You can change to a higher or lower key or to a C major key that allows
you to play any song or hymn without sharps or flats. The C major key is
ideal for beginning piano players who want to learn to play a particular
song or hymn. You can either select the key you want to play from the list, or
you can click the up or down arrows to transpose the music up or down. When the
music is transposed, you can print or listen to the music. You can return to the music's original key by pressing the “Reset key.”
Tune Names Index
The Tune Name Index lists the tune name given to each hymn in the hymnbook.
Traditionally a hymn tune is somewhat independent of any particular
text.
Using the Hymnbook
This material will help you use the hymnbook effectively. There are explanations of the elements of the hymnbook;
discussions on using the hymns for congregations, choirs, and special groups;
and information for beginning music directors, organists, and pianists.
Site System Requirements
Monitor Resolution
While the Interactive Church Music Player is usable at a monitor resolution
of 800 x 600, setting your monitor to the 1024 x 768 resolution will allow you to
see all of the controls without scrolling from side to side.
Downloading Web Browsers
This site is best viewed using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later and
Netscape 6.0 or later. Check with Microsoft and Netscape for updates and patches
to their respective browsers. To download and install the latest version of one
or both of these browsers, click on one of the links below.
