One Sunday morning my two-and-a-half-year-old son accompanied me to the ward library window. I told the librarian which picture I needed. Then another teacher requested chalk and an eraser. Hearing all of this, my son promptly stepped up to the window and said matter-of-factly, “I’ll have a sam-wich.”

My companion and I were getting gas at a service station when a large van with California license plates pulled in. Eager to ask people from my home state the golden questions, I talked with them for a while and then asked if they had heard of the Mormons.
“I think so,” said the lady.
“Well, we’re the Mormons,” I said.
She paused for a few seconds and then smiled:
“Happy to meet you. We’re the Thompsons.”

Everyone in our gospel doctrine class watched with interest as the teacher held out her cupped hand and announced, “I have here the fruit of the tree of life! Who would like a bite of it?” After a moment of silence, she renewed her appeal for a volunteer, adding that this fruit was delicious beyond description. But the silence continued, and the gleam of anticipation on her face was beginning to fade. Just then a pious voice piped up from the back of the room: “It’s fast Sunday!”

“Do you often find yourself mixing your stake presidency work with your dental work?” one patient asked me.
“Probably more than I realize,” I answered, “but I hope it never offends anyone.”
“Well, the last time you worked on my teeth,” she chuckled, “you said that if anything bothered me I was to show it by the uplifted hand?”

My husband and I watched with amusement one night as our eighteen-month-old thumbed through the manual after a family home evening. He periodically looked up at us to proudly identify illustrations as “man,” “tree,” and “bird.” His smile suddenly changed to a look of bewilderment as he came to a full-page picture of a somewhat solemn-looking First Presidency of the Church. He pondered the men for several seconds, then smiled as if he understood. “Amen,” he said, and gently closed the manual.
