The O. C. Tanner Gift of Music Concert, An American Songbook, will feature the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Utah Symphony, conducted by Erich Kunzel, with Denyce Graves and Brian Stokes Mitchell. This concert will be in the Conference Center auditorium on Friday and Saturday, September 19-20, 2008, at 7:30 p.m.
The repertoire includes favorite selections from American choral literature represented by such composers as George M. Cohan, Richard Rodgers, John Williams, Woody Guthrie, and Irving Berlin.
Erich Kunzel, conductor of the famed Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, directed the choir when they visited Cincinnati in 2007. His recordings with the Pops have topped worldwide crossover charts. The Pops made history by becoming the first American pops orchestra to perform in China in October 2005—a visit that was repeated this year at the Olympic Games in Beijing. In 2006, Kunzel was awarded the National Medal of Arts.
Denyce Graves, an American opera singer, has appeared in the world's great opera houses and concert halls on four continents. She is a mezzo-soprano noted for the title roles in Carmen and Samson et Dalila but her repertoire extends to include popular works as well. She is a cultural ambassador for the United States and has participated in many patriotic activities and benefit performances.
Brian Stokes Mitchell, an American film, stage, and television actor, is a robust baritone. His career includes Tony Award-winning performances on Broadway, a multitude of television and film appearances, and a list of impressive concert performances. He has worked with numerous charitable organizations and is currently president of the Actor's Fund.
