221 The Ten Lepers

And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at [Jesus'] feet, giving him thanks. Luke 17:1516

Once when Jesus was traveling to Jerusalem through Samaria and Galilee, He met ten lepers. They cried out to Him, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us" (Luke 17:13; see also Luke 17:1112). He told them to go show themselves to the priests. As they went to obey Jesus' command, they were cleansed of their leprosy. (See Luke 17:14.)

Even though all ten lepers had been healed, only one of the men thought to return and thank Jesus for the miracle He had performed for them. The man "turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at [Jesus'] feet, giving him thanks" (Luke 17:1516). This man was a Samaritan, or a "stranger," as Jesus called him (see Luke 17:18). Jesus said to him, "Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole" (Luke 17:19).

Summary

As Jesus entered a certain village He met ten men suffering from a disease called leprosy. They pleaded with Him to have mercy on them. Jesus told them to go and show themselves to the priests. As they went to do so, they were healed. Only one of the men, when he saw he was cured, turned back to thank Jesus for healing him.
