Biography:

Michael K. Fletcher was born and raised in Salt Lake City. He served in the Brazilian Mission for twenty-seven months from 1965 to 1967. He then graduated from UCLA and served in the U.S. Army as an officer in Special Forces (Green Berets) for three years. The experience was an exciting one but he discovered that arguing with explosive devices and bullets can be a dieing experience. He chose to resign his commission and go into the corporate world…at least the frequency of armed conflict is less. For more than twenty five years he worked in Human Resources rising to the level of Senior Vice President in a real estate investment and corporate housing company. He has traveled extensively in South America and speaks Portuguese, Spanish and can get by in English. In the recent past, he traveled throughout North and South America, driving his Hummer to the Arctic Ocean on the north coast of Alaska and then back south through Canada and the United States from the Pacific Coast to the Atlantic seaboard. He then headed south through Mexico and Central America. He then moved into Venezuela and headed south through the Amazon Basin in Brazil – traveling the entire length of Brazil. South of Brazil, he went through Uruguay and the length of Argentina through La Pampa and Patagonia. He stopped in Tierra del Fuego…having driven as far south as anyone can – anywhere in the world. He came back through Chile crossing the Atacama Desert…one of the driest places on earth. The whole trip took nearly two years, speaking three languages, through fourteen countries and met a whole lot of “really neat people”. He has very few serious scars and only a handful of bullet holes in the car. The eighteen-foot long Anaconda he brought home is dead. Brother Fletcher is married to the former Leocádia Rachor whom he met in Argentina. She is originally from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He has four grown children, three of whom are married. He also has five grandchildren. All but one of his children have lived outside of the United States for an extended period of time and can speak at least one other language fluently. It is fun to watch….English, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, French, German, Hebrew, Arabic, Sotho, Afrikaans, and Southern Drawl. Brother Fletcher has served in many different roles in the Church: He was a Scoutmaster for more than eleven years and High Councilor for ten years. He was mission president for three years, stake YM president for three years, and a teacher at the Westwood LDS Institute near UCLA starting nearly ten years ago. He began teaching in the Church Educational System more than thirty years ago in the Early Morning Seminary program. He has been the Gospel Doctrine teacher in Sunday School three different times (his current calling). He has been active in Scouting for many years. He has participated in seven National Scout Jamborees, and a World Jamboree in Chile. He serves on the Los Angeles Area Council Executive Board and is the International Representative for the Council. He has received the Silver Beaver Award, is an Eagle Scout and a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow.
