ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS
Do you have to be a college student to attend institute classes?
NO! Institute classes are open to EVERYONE, whether attending college or not. Classes are available during the morning, afternoon, and evening to accomodate all class and work schedules. There are classes available at other institue locations as well, (See Henderson Institute in the South, North Las Vegas, and West Charleston Institutes) to help you find one that fits your needs.
What are the dance dress standards?
Dances sponsored by the IRSC have the following dress standards: Clothing should be modest and neat. Specifically, there should be no sleeveless or bare-midriff shirts. Hats are not permitted. Females are allowed one pair of earrings, no other piercings for guys or gals. No offensive logos or slogans of any kind. Generally shorts are not permitted. Sometimes at outdoor dances they are, and when permitted, should be knee-length. Please use good judgment in your clothing and appearance. Anyone not following these standards will be asked to change before entering the dance.
When and where are the dances? Is there a listing somewhere?
There are a few different ways to find out about when and where dances, firesides, and other activities are held. You can call the Las Vegas YSA Hotline 593-4444x1 for the most updated information. Also, there is a calendar of events in the institute, as well as on the website; we try to keep it as up-to-date as possible. The final way is to join the institute email list; it is a weekly mailing of upcoming events and activities. If you would like to subscribe, click on "E-mail Announcements" in the upper left corner, and follow the instructions to be added to the list.
I will be moving to Las Vegas/attending UNLV. How do I find an LDS roommate or job?
The institute maintains a book that lists apartments being offered for rent. (We can send an e-mail attachment in Excel if you are not in the area.) We also have an employment resource book at the institute run by the missionaries. For more information, email us by clicking the "Feedback" link in the upper right corner, or call us at (702)736-7045.
How many credits and what classes do I need to take to graduate?
Fourteen credits are required for institute graduation. Of these, eight credits are required in bscripture-based/b courses (Book of Mormon, New and Old Testament, Doctrine & Covenants, Pearl of Great Price, Teachings of the Living Prophets, or Doctrines of the Gospel). Of these eight, four of these must be the two Book of Mormon courses.brbrThe remaining six credits may be chosen from any of the other courses.brbrAll courses are worth two credits, except for Leadership Training courses (IRSC and LDSSA) and Choir. These are worth one.
Are there Institute classes held in the North Area?
Yes! The North Las Vegas Institute has a few classes offered at the Horse & Thom Chapel. For the days and times, please check the Institute Registration for that Institute
My husband and I graduated from USU a couple years ago and have been living in Henderson. We haven't been able to find a wholesome place for some fun 'date night' dancing. Are there any activities or dances for married students?
Unfortunately, we do not currently have anything officially organized for activities for recently married couples. At least, not through the Institute.
How can I become a full-time institute instructor?
Be prepared for a rather competitive selection process. You would need to talk to a local Seminary or Institute coordinator to get started. You also must have taught seminary for at least 2 years and have at least a bachelor's degree.
