Where can I go to make new friends?
The best way to make new friends is to be involved at the Institute. Take a class, serve on a student council committee, have lunch, play ping-pong, pool or foosball in the Institute lounge, or attend Institute activities and dances.
What is the purpose of Institute?
The main purpose of Institutes of Religion is to help young single adults grow in knowledge and faith in God, the Father, and His Son Jesus Christ through scriptural study. Along with gospel study, Institutes provide wholesome leadership, social and service opportunities.
If I am not a college student, may I still attend Institute?
Yes! All young adults 18-30 are welcome to register for classes and attend activities at the Institute.
Does the Institute have summer classes?
Yes! We are currently accepting registration for summer classes. Summer term will begin the week of June 9 and will end on July 31. Come see what we have to offer.
When do classes begin for the new term? And, when is the Institute office open to finalize registration?
Classes for the new term begin the week of January 12, 2004. The office is open Monday-Friday from 9:00 A.M.-4:00 P.M.
How do I find a student branch to attend in the Four Corner's Area?
For information on meeting times and location for the Singles/Student Branch in the Four Corners Area, please call President Dewey Getz at (505)324-8519 (home), or (505)327-3044.
What connection do the Institutes have with colleges?
Adjacent to almost every institution of higher learning in the United States, from Ivy League schools to community colleges there are various independent religious centers. Such organizations have no official connection with the schools, but academic leaders generally welcome them, recognizing that they have a positive effect on the various campuses. Religion centers sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are called Institutes of Religion and are also found in an ever growing number of foreign countries.
What is there for those planning to go on a mission?
Most Institute classes would be helpful for mission preparation. This term a class taught by a former mission president and specifically designed to help prospective missionaries prepare themselves for effective service will be offered. See the Class Schedule for details.
How do I find an adult religion class?
Adult Religion classes are offered through BYU Continuing Education (with local stake sponsorship). The Continuing Education phone number is 1-800-346-6218, or they may be reached online at www.byu.edu/ces.
Does the Institute have service activities in which I can be involved?
Yes, the student council sponsors service activities. You can get detailed information by contacting the Institute office at (505)599-9800.
What are the Graduation Requirements?
Graduation requirements at the Institute are fourteen semester hours. Eight hours are now required in scripture-based courses of which four semester hours (two classes) are required in Book of Mormon. The remaining six hours may be chosen from any of the other courses offered,in any combination.
How many credits do you need to graduate from Institute? If you went to BYU, do religion credits transfer?
It takes 14 credit hours to graduate from Institute as outlined in the above question and answer. The credits do transfer to BYU if the class is taken and a letter grade is given. A "pass" credit counts for Institute graduation, but will not transfer to BYU A letter grade must be earned for transfer credit.
Do you have classes for students over age 30?
For all adults in the Four Corners Area, there have been adult religion classes held at various times and places. For information on these classes, go to: www.byu.edu/ces or call 1-800-345-6218. You can also talk to your local Stake President. However, no Institute graduation credit is given for taking these courses.
How do I register for an Institute class online?
Just click on the "Register for Classes" hyperlink on the left side of the screen and follow the links. Classes are organized by day of the week and time taught. After registering online you will still need to come to the Institute office and finalize your registration by paying your fee.
