ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS
What is the purpose of Institute?
Institute of religion programs provide weekday religious instruction for single and married college students. Young single adults ages 18-30 are also welcome to attend. In addition to religious instruction, institutes provide students with opportunities to grow spiritually through service, social interaction, and leadership training. Institutes also assist parents and priesthood leaders in encouraging youth to serve missions and marry in the temple.
Who may attend?
Institute classes are intended for single and married college students. Young single adults ages 18-30, student spouses, and friends are also welcome to attend.
What does the Institute offer besides classes?
The institute building is open all day five days a week for student use. The kitchen is always available for snack purchases and food preparation. Eat lunch with other students hanging out here or have a picnic on the lawn outside. Study in the library or check out any of the hundreds of religious books in circulation. Come enjoy a nap on the couch or a game of pool or foos-ball. Need someone to talk to? Sit down and have a chat with our senior couple missionaries. In addition, activities, service projects, and firesides are offered regularly each quarter. Come to the Institute and make it 'yours'!
What is Friday Forum?
During the school year, every Friday at noon we invite an LDS speaker from the community to address us. The senior couple missionaries then serve lunch. A $2 donation is requested to defray the cost of the food. All are invited, so bring your friends!
Are there any student activity fees?
There are no student fees. Funds are allocated through CES for the various classes, events, and activities.
How do I register for classes?
You can register for any of the classes at the Institute office, on this website under "Register for Classes", or at the quarterly Registration BBQ. Check the calendar to find out when the next BBQ is.
Where can I get the Institute Student Manuals?
Institute Student Manuals are available online in pdf format. Access them by going to www.ldsces.org and clicking on the "Institute Manuals" link. They are also available for purchase at www.ldscatalog.com.
Are credits for Institute classes transferable?
If you are coming to SLO from another Institute, let the secretary know and she can request your records. If you are planning on attending any of the Church schools, classes can be taken for BYU credit. Simply notify Brother Hunsaker within the first two weeks of class and he will give you the necessary assignments.
How do I graduate from Institute?
Complete 21 quarter hours of coursework, including one year of Book of Mormon (Rel. 121, 122 & 123). Contact the secretary to find out how close you are to graduation.
What is the IRSC?
The Institute of Religion Student Council, or IRSC, is called and set apart by Priesthood Leaders to plan, coordinate, and carry out dances, activities, service projects, and other Institute functions. Check out this year's IRSC under "Student Organizations."
