ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS
Why should I enroll in an Institute Class?
President Gordon B. Hinckley has said, "We urge all for whom it is available to take advantage of institute. We do not hesitate to promise that your knowledge of the gospel will be increased, your faith will be strengthened, and you will develop wonderful associations and friendships" (Ensign, November 1995, p. 51). Elder Henry B. Eyring taught, "We should always put spiritual learning first....That is why the Church has placed institutes of religion across the earth wherever young members are gathered in sufficient numbers. Their spiritual education in the institute will shape the purpose and speed the process of their secular learning (D&C 88:76-80)" (CES Fireside for Young Adults, 6 May 2001). Elder L. Tom Perry explained, "The power that comes from institute…will put a shield of protection around you to keep you free from the temptations and trials of the world... I know of no better place for the young people…than in the institute" (Ensign, November 1997, p. 60).
How do I enroll in an Institute class?
Simply come to class! Your institute instructor will have a registration form for you once you arrive. You can also enroll online! Check out the registration link on the left hand of this website. You can enroll at any time during the semester. Just come on out!
How much does Institute cost?
There are no fees or costs for enrolling in class. Institute is free of charge!
How many young adults enroll in Institute classes in Charleston?
Over 120 students enrolled in Institute classes in the Charleston Stake during the 2005-2006 semesters. Between 60-70 students enroll each semester. Since there are many students coming and going each semester, new faces show up to class each week. Class size on any given night ranges between 30-40 students.
Are there any social activities I can participate in?
Yes! There are many activities for young adults in the Charleston area sponsored by the Institute or the YSA Branch. Some of the activities we have had in the past include: a Bonfire at the beach, barbecues, extreme bowling, service projects, flour wars and other night games, pumpkin-carving contests, indoor soccer, volleyball, dodge-ball, basketball, tennis, gallon challenge, Stingray hockey, CES fireside broadcasts, water fights, Apples-to-Apples, March Mastery Madness, Church History Jeopardy, Sardines, hide and seek in the dark, Halloween party, the phone blitz, and more. And yes, you’ll find food at every activity! In fact, if you are active in institute you won’t ever have to worry about being bored or going hungry ever again! You can check out our calendar to see what activities are coming up. Many of the statewide YSA activities and dances are posted on the calendar.
How do I get an Institute manual to use in my personal study?
Student manuals are an excellent way to enhance your knowledge of the gospel. However, you are not required to have an institute manual to participate in the class. If you would like one there are a couple of ways to access it: (1) Study a PDF or HTML version of the manual free of charge online: Simply go to www.ldsces.org, click on the tab labled "Institute Manuals," and choose one of the 14 available manuals. (2) If you choose to purchase a manual, you can buy it in electronic format on CD-ROM, or in traditional bound format, both from www.ldscatalog.com. If you purchase these items, they will be shipped directly to your home free of charge!
Can I come to Institute if I am married?
Yes, if you are between the ages of 18-30! We have married students in our classes each semester and appreciate the perspective they add to class.
Where are institute classes being held in the stake?
