QUESTIONS
Hello! I am interested in attending Columbia University. I was wondering if I could possibly talk to, by email, an Institute student about the college. I would really like to get the perspective of an LDS student on the university, because there are several issues that people who are not LDS simply do not understand the importance of. If I could get a reply that would be great! Thank you.
About how many LDS students attend Columbia?
My daughter is looking at NYU for next year. What kinds of social activities does Institute provide? Are the kids who come a pretty cohesive group?
I am a recent graduate of BYU and married, working in NYC. Unfortunately my husband works very long hours, so I am interested in attending an institute class. Is it ok for married, non-students to attend institute? Can I just go sit in on any class or do I need to register? Thank you for your help.
Hello,brI am from California and am hoping to get an internship in the New York City/ Manhattan area in the summer. I was wondering if you knew of anyone who is in need of a roommate or any other possible housing options. I would really like to stay with other latter day saints! Thank you!

I am interested in attending NYU. I would also love to find a LDS contact that goes there. It would help the decision process a lot by adding the perspective I am looking for. Do you have any ideas? Thanks!
I am a senior at byu who has an internship lined up. I am looking to live with a member if at all possible. The Yahoo housing group does not seem to be working. Is there a way to obtain that list otherwise?

Please contact Jon Stephenson, the Institute director at Columbia University (see contact information under faculty). He works with the LDS students at Columbia and can refer you to someone in particular.
About how many LDS students attend Columbia?
Including undergraduates and graduate students at the various campuses, about 125.
My daughter is looking at NYU for next year. What kinds of social activities does Institute provide? Are the kids who come a pretty cohesive group?
Institute at NYU is very active. While there is no institute building next to campus, the Union Square Chapel is just a 10 minute walk away. Institute at NYU meets in the Kimmel Center and is a great place for students and other young single adults to come and make friends! Besides the regulary weekly courses, institute provides monthly firesides, devotionals, dances, and other activities.

You are welcome at any class. However, you may find the Wednesdays at 11:00 am Union Square Chapel class more enjoyable (people in this class are in a similar situation as yours). It is attended mostly by wives of students and working professionals.

The New York, NY Stake offers a service that may meet your needs. You can send them a message about what you are looking for at manhattaneighthward_housing@yahoogroups.com. Let me know if that doesn't work for you.

The only young single adults wards in New York City are in Manhattan. The Brooklyn NY Stake has an active young single adult and institute program as well. See News and Announcements for information about YSA wards.

Zaundra: There are other LDS students at MMM. Call me for more information at 917-771-2996. Brother Stephenson
I am currently trying to decide about attending New York Medical College for school. Which institute program / singles ward does this school fall under?
What is the full name of the Medical School? I'm not sure which one you are refering to. If it's the NYU Medical School, It is located in the Union Square 3rd Ward, and we an insstitute group that meets each month at the NYU Dental School, a couple of block away. Good Luck!
I am thinking about moving to New York City, and I was wondering if there are any singles wards for people over the age of 30?
Wendy: There are no wards or branches for singles over age 30 in NYC. However, there are active programs in the area for over 30 singles. You can learn more about it at www.thesaints.org. Let me know if I can help with more information. Jon Stephenson

Jennifer: If you are considering NYU as an undergraduate, I suggest you contact Bethany Burr (bjb311@nyu.edu). She is our LDSSA president at NYU. You could also contact Tess Younker (tessy@nyu.edu). Let me know how it all works out. Good luck! \Brother Stephenson

I have several resources for single LDS students but have not found much for married students. Are there similar resources for married students?
The housing resources are intended to serve both married and single members. And while the majority of listing are for single members, if you subscribe you should receive from time to time information that works for marrieds as well. If you would like to contact marrieds at NYU directly, I can refer you to several people for assistance. Just let me know.
What is Columbia University's policy for young men serving 2 year LDS missions?
I cannot quote their policy, but we have had students leave and return from missions every year since I have been here. Students simply must apply for a leave of absence. It should not be a problem.
