ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS
Why do we have Institute?
"Institutes...provide weekday religious instruction for all young single adults ages 18-30. In addition...they provide opportunities to meet, associate with, and establish lasting relationships with other young single adults; serve; receive leadership training; address concerns related to academic work; and grow spiritually. Institutes assist local priesthood leaders in encouraging young single adults to serve missions and marry in the temple." (CES Policy Manual, 7)
Who attends Institute?
There are three primary groups of people who attend institute: (1) LDS students ages 18-30 who pursue educational or vocational training beyond high school; (2) student spouses ages 18-30; (3) young single adults ages 18-30 who are not in college.
How do I register for class?
You may register for a class at the Terre Haute church building on Tuesdays 7:00-8:30 pm. If you prefer to register online, click on the "Register for Classes" hyperlink on the left side of this window, and follow the links. After registering online, you will receive a confirmation email.
How much does it cost?
? CES has changed their policy, and no longer charges activity fees to students, their spouses, and young single adults 18-30.
Where can I get an Institute manual?
Institute manuals are available online at ldsces.org, or may be ordered through the Church Distribution Center (ldscatalog.com)
How do I graduate from Institute?
A Certificate of Achievement may be awarded those students who complete 8 credit hours of classes, at least 2 of which must be in the Book of Mormon. Those who complete 14 credit hours of classes, with at least 4 hours in the Book of Mormon, will be eligible for the Certificate of Graduation. A Special Certificate of Achievement may be awarded those students who complete at least 4 credit hours beyond Graduation.
Can Institute credit be transferable to other schools?
Institute credit may be transferred to any institute of religion, or to a Church school under certain conditions. Some courses might be accepted by other universities and colleges. (Information must be obtained from the individual institutions.) Brigham Young University requires that a student must receive a letter grade to transfer credit to BYU. Therefore, the student must notify the institute instructor during the first three weeks of class and make known the intention to complete the course requirements for a letter grade. Fulfillment of the requirements must be completed during the time the student is taking the class. The requirements are determined by the instructor (i.e., assignments, tests, etc. on an academic level comparable to the same courses taught at the university).
