What It Is
The Tutoring and Learning Assistance Labs (LAL) are open study labs with free tutoring. They assist students who, for various reasons, are struggling with their studies. Many students experience difficulty in their classes, particularly during their freshman year, because they don't know where to turn to develop the necessary study skills or where to find the learning assistance that will help them succeed.
Tutoring and structured learning assistance is provided to interested students (including students with disabilities) free of charge in the areas of reading, writing, mathematics, and study skills. There were 6,821 students served last year, representing 35,837 hours of service by fellow students.
Why It Is a Priority
The Learning Assistance Lab blesses lives. It helps create successful students. And, while students can receive free tutoring, the labs are also the source of employment and experience for approximately 175 student-tutors. This is significant as it exemplifies the administration's desire to help students through employment and by giving them opportunities to teach fellow students.
What It Does and How It Helps
The goals of LAL are to teach students how to learn, to encourage them, to help improve their study skills, and especially to give them the self confidence to go forward as independent learners. For some students, Learning Assistants has made all the difference in their college experience
In many cases, those being tutored turn around and tutor others the following semester. This free service and the students' level of involvement are almost unprecedented. The programs have even been recognized, envied, and emulated by other colleges and universities.
Your investment in this program will give many students the opportunity they need to succeed, and will dramatically change the course of their lives and the lives of their families. Your immediate assistance will be most appreciated.
