Selected Academic Programs
Brigham Young University Idaho
Funding Goal:   $600,000

What It Is
Selected Academic Programs is a means by which smaller, or ancillary programs around campus are selectively supported. To be approved, these programs are carefully reviewed to determine the part they play in the vital academic nature of the department under which they fall, and in the overall mission of BYU—Idaho.

Why It Is a Priority
As one would expect, there are many programs and areas around campus which do not receive as much recognition as some of the other institutional priorities because of their scope, or just the relatively small amount of dollars needed to begin or complete them. Although these may not be considered among the larger needs of the institution, they are essential to the curriculum as a whole. If it were not for the overarching purpose of Selected Academic Programs, these important components simply could not receive the support they need.

What It Does and How It Helps
Because of its unique objective, Selected Academic Programs benefits students in a variety of ways—from medical training to journalism.

With funds directed through this priority, the university was recently able to replace the ambulance it had used for several years with a more technologically equipped model. This newer, better-furnished, and more standard vehicle will be used to better prepare students for the kinds of modern instruments they will encounter as they become employed in emergency medicine.

Another development, spurred by the recent transition from Ricks College to BYU—Idaho,is that the campus newspaper staff determined, after many years, to change the format from tabloid size to a larger, more common layout. Only with new computers, especially equipped for this style of newspaper organization, was the Scroll staff able to make that change, thereby providing a more advanced experience for journalism students.

While these and many other projects are not as recognized by the public at large, or even the general campus community in some cases, they play an essential part in the education of specific groups of students at BYU—Idaho. Your support of Selected Academic Programs will help provide these indispensable areas with equipment and other assistance that they might not otherwise receive.

How Giving Is Helping
BYU-Idaho EMT Student Barry Raymond

Proper Training Enables Student in Life-and-Death Situation
Working under pressure is second nature for Barry Raymond, a BYU–Idaho student and emergency medical technician (EMT) trainee who, while interning in Texas, was called in to assist in the search for a man who had fallen in a lake. When the man was found barely alive, Barry was the only EMT present. At that moment his education was put to the ultimate test.  Full Story
