What It Is
BYU—Idaho's Adaptive Services Adventure Program (ASAP) is a high-adventure program that offers exciting and usually first-time experiences such as skiing, arena horseback riding, rappelling, dog sledding, and canoeing to members of all mental and physical ability levels.
Why It Is a Priority
Expensive, specialized equipment is necessary for the esteem-building activities ASAP organizes for students. Many of the participants already have added expenses. The typical student can't afford the fees that often go along with many of the program's activities.
What It Does and How It Helps
The BYU—Idaho Adaptive Services Adventure Program enriches the lives of students with a wide range of physical skills and abilities. Their experience is that when a disability is faced and accepted, most of the challenges and difficulties that come with it become secondary, and often minimal. “We get people—disabled and non-disabled—to do things they never thought they would or could,” says the coordinating director, Steve Andersen. He, in fact, exemplifies this as he leads most of the adventures despite his own cerebral palsy.
Your support will enable students to literally conquer mountains they never dreamed they could. Through the experiences they have in ASAP, their lives will be monumentally changed as they discover skills and meet challenges many “able-bodied” individuals may never attempt.
