Matching Gift Program Multiplies the "Widow's Mite"

The story of the widow's mite in the New Testament is a timeless lesson on giving and the worth of each individual. The Savior did not recognize persons of great wealth who made displays of their offerings. Instead, he made an example of a simple woman who had few possessions, but was willing to share all that she had. The lesson has inspired the faithful to emulate the widow's example.

In the same way, BYU—Hawaii's Voyage of Faith program rewards even the smallest act of sharing and multiplies the value of that gift up to 10 times. Long-time friends of the university have generously mobilized a monumental matching gift program that will raise scholarship funds over the next five years. Their principal goal is to involve everyone in the spirit of giving to BYU—Hawaii.

The Ma Manuhi’i Legacy Scholarship fund has been established to help students in Asia and Polynesia improve their lives and communities by attending school at BYU Hawaii. Approved by President Gordon B. Hinckley and the BYU–Hawaii Board of Trustees, the Ma Manuhi’i Legacy Scholarship will make it possible for many more eligible students to receive an education here—and become an influence for peace in their home countries after graduation.

Many from our target regions of Asia and the Pacific never can attend BYU Hawaii. They have no money. All too frequently their families are unable to provide even a dollar of assistance.

When President David O. McKay established BYU–Hawaii, he prophesied:

"You mark my word, and from this school I’ll tell you will go men and women whose influence will be felt for good toward the establishment of peace internationally".

Designating your gift to Ma Manuhi’i Legacy Scholarship will allow young men and women to leave their Pacific Island and Asian homes and come to Hawaii to enjoy the blessings of an education, temple attendance, and work at the Polynesian Cultural Center. When their journey at the university is finished, these young men and women will be encouraged to complete their voyage by returning home to bless their families, communities, and nations.
