Humanities Annual Fund

•  College Annual Fund (click here to donate)
The College of Humanities Annual Fund provides funds to be used at the discretion of the dean where the need is greatest.
•  Scholarships (click here to donate)
The Scholarship Fund provides deserving students in the College of Humanities with the financial means needed to attend school.
•  Sophie Mentored Project (click here to donate)
The Sophie Mentored Project is a model which incorporates mentored undergraduate research and explores the possibilities of online databases and technology. Students acquire proficiency in computer use, library research, document collection, editing, analytical writing, design, and business interface. The Sophie Digital Library preserves a number of early German-language creative works which might otherwise be lost, making them easily available from a single source, at no cost to users.(To read more, click here)

Melanie Antuna, Theatre Studies

From the Dean:

Once a year I receive some good news when the director of the BYU Annual Fund comes to my office and lets me know how much has been donated to our college. I’m always surprised because the amount is quite significant. You and many others who support our college are very generous!

Almost immediately, my thoughts turn to the students who will benefit from your generosity.

To me, donations to the BYU Annual Fund represent more than money. Each contribution is a gift of light. Each dollar helps another student to shine. You would enjoy seeing the faces of these students when we tell them they have qualified for a scholarship—or that their application for a mentored learning grant has been approved. Their countenances brighten. For many it is an answer to prayer. And they are always appreciative.

I, too, appreciate your past support of the BYU Annual Fund. Thank you for your last gift.

Here’s a short report to illustrate how your investment in education enabled us to let another light shine.

MEET MELANIE ANTUNA
Melanie Antuna has been blessed with experiences that have taken her thousands of miles beyond a traditional BYU education. While working with our German Department’s Sophie Digital Library (which focuses on extending the canon of German literature to female authors and composers), Melanie learned of mentoring grants. Thanks to those who donated to our college through the BYU Annual Fund, she discovered that grants were available to students who had an idea for new research. Melanie didn’t just want to work for the library; she wanted to add something worthwhile to the library.

She selected a specific female author, talked with her professors, and applied for a mentoring grant. Before long she was flying to Vienna, Austria. There she spent a semester collecting the author’s texts. Today these texts are available in the Sophie Digital Library for others to enjoy and use for research.

The experience has changed Melanie’s life. “I have learned so many life skills,” she explains. “I have learned how to navigate myself through foreign computer systems, through foreign countries, and through foreign cultures. I will always be grateful for the opportunities that have been given me and the many skills I have learned while here at this university. I knew that I would get a great education at BYU, but I never anticipated that I would be getting such a better ‘me’ in the end.”

Because of you and many generous people like you, I think Melanie has a very bright future. Wherever she goes, her light will shine.
