From the Dean: Preparing Students for Success

Rex and Maureen Rawlinson, Michael Howell, Kristen Byrd, Caleb Frischknecht, Dean Kevin Worthen, and Joseph Rawlinson at this year’s annual Burns Foundation luncheon at BYU. The Burns Foundation, administered by Rawlinson, contributes to BYU programs and colleges including the Rex E. Lee Advocacy Program and the J. Reuben Clark Law School. Students Howell, Byrd, and Frischknect recently took first place among 178 student teams from 103 law schools in the National Appellate Competition.

The J. Reuben Clark Law School exists to educate future lawyers; we prepare our students to make a positive difference in the world—and you are helping us do this. Donations to the school from alumni and friends like you allow us to assist students in many ways.

Thanks to individual and institutional donors, funding is nearly complete for the Rex E. Lee Advocacy Program. A special thanks to Brigham Young University President’s Leadership Council member Paul Gilbert who has actively chaired fund-raising efforts for the program.

Rex E. Lee, former solicitor general of the United States, founding dean of the J. Reuben Clark Law School, and former president of BYU, understood that legal writing, research, analysis, and oral advocacy skills were essential for a successful legal career. These were skills he exemplified in his career. The advocacy program provides first-year students with opportunities to develop these skills through one-on-one conferences and small classes. With the full funding of this program, President Lee’s legacy will be passed to future generations.

TAKING TOP HONORS
In my view, it is not coincidental that the near completion of funding for the advocacy program corresponds with the noted success of our students. Kristen Byrd, Michael Howell, and Caleb Frischknecht (pictured above) represented the law school at the National Appellate Competition hosted by the American Bar Association Law Student Division. They placed first among 178 teams from 103 law schools. Success at this premier competition, which tests students’ competence in research and written and oral advocacy, is evidence of the valued added to the education of our students by the advocacy program.

Without the support of alumni and friends, we would not have been able to provide the setting where these students’ skills were developed. That this same training is now available to each of our students is a credit to all—professors, administrators, and donors—who together have made the Rex E. Lee Advocacy Program a reality.
