Serena Buss, Business Management Graduate

From the Dean:

Each year I look forward to receiving the report of contributions made to the Marriott School Annual Fund. I’m always pleased with the consistency and generosity of friends like you. The money you and others donate is significant.

BYU and the Marriott School exist to assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life. We do this in part by developing students of faith, intellect, and character who have the skills and desire to continue learning and serving throughout their lives.

Your donation to the Annual Fund enhances students’ experiences here on campus. Each dollar helps. Many receive financial aid or mentored learning grants funded by gifts to the Annual Fund. For these students your support is often an answer to their prayers.

I, too, appreciate your ongoing support of the Annual Fund. Thank you for your past gifts. I’d like to share the story of one of our students to illustrate how your investment is a gift of light and learning.

MEET SERENA BUSS
Serena Buss, a single mother of two young boys, had strong feelings that she should do three things: (1) be a good mother, (2) provide for her family, and (3) obtain an education. What she didn’t know was how she could accomplish all three.

So she prayed. “I told the Lord I was willing, but that He needed to show me the way. I looked into every avenue and opportunity. I researched several schools—comparing the quality, cost, and financial aid available,” Serena explained. “Through a series of what I call miracles, one door after another was opened.”

Serena received several BYU scholarships and grants, which allowed her to concentrate on her studies and be a good mom.

Serena says these funds have blessed every aspect of her life. “Many of my paradigms changed while attending BYU. The way I see myself, my life, and others changed dramatically. My ability and desire to learn has been enhanced. This knowledge is invaluable and will influence for good every facet of my future.”

Serena is planning to earn a master’s degree in public administration with an emphasis in nonprofit management. “With this degree I plan to work for a nonprofit organization that serves underprivileged families in the community,” Serena says.

Because of you and many generous people like you, I think Serena has a very bright future. Wherever she goes, her light will shine.
