Christine Mariko Scott
Integrative Biology

From the Dean:

Once a year I receive some good news when the director of the BYU Annual Fund comes to my office and lets me know how much has been donated to our college. I’m always surprised because the amount is quite significant. You and many others who support our college are very generous!

Almost immediately, my thoughts turn to the students who will benefit from your generosity.

To me, donations to the BYU Annual Fund represent more than money. Each contribution is a gift of light. Each dollar helps another student to shine. You would enjoy seeing the faces of these students when we tell them they have qualified for a scholarship—or that their application for a mentored learning grant has been approved. Their countenances brighten. For many it is an answer to prayer. And they are always appreciative.

I, too, appreciate your past support of the BYU Annual Fund. Thank you for your last gift.

Here’s a short report to illustrate how your investment in education enabled us to let another light shine.

Students who come to Brigham Young University are exemplary people—measured by their academic preparation and the way they live their lives. The dedicated faculty’s intent is to prepare these students to be leaders in their fields of study and in other life capacities.

To give our students educational opportunities beyond the classroom, we are focused on providing mentored experiences and internships.

MEET CHRISTINE MARIKO SCOTT
Christine Mariko Scott from Chula Vista, California, is an integrative biology major who is grateful for those who donate to our college. Because of generous contributions, several students each year have the opportunity to participate with Dr. Lee Braithwaite on what has become known as the “West Coast trip.”

Christine was one of those selected for the experience.

“The funds made it possible,” Christine says, “for Dr. Braithwaite to take us to the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology.”

There, Christine enjoyed a unique combination of lectures, field trips, and personal research. What was learned in lecture one day came to life in the field the next and was then applied in the laboratory.

The following year Christine became a teaching assistant for the trip, and her appreciation for donors deepened.

“I saw how much of the trip is made possible by donated gifts,” she says. “The lab and supply rentals, the boat time, and all the little things that brought the trip together and made it special were made possible only by those funds.”

As a result of the experience, Christine has been privileged (while still an undergraduate) to coauthor two scientific papers with Dr. Braithwaite.

Christine, who plans to pursue a career in marine biology, realizes the value of her BYU experience. She explains: “Many great marine biologists have risen out of the college’s West Coast trip. I have gained methods for research that could have been learned only through hands-on experience. The program will be a base for my career.”

Because of you and many generous people like you, I think Christine has a very bright future. Wherever she goes, her light will shine.
