Saying Goodbye to President Hinckley

President Gordon B. Hinckley and his wife Sister Hinckley SALT LAKE CITY, 2 February 2008 - Funeral services for President Gordon B. Hinckley, leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, were held Saturday, February 2, in the Conference Center in Salt Lake City.

Elder John K. Carmack Speaks about Perpetual Education Fund

Elder John K. Carmack, an emeritus General Authority and managing director of the Church's Perpetual Education Fund, spoke at the 18th annual conference of the LDS International Society, which was held at Brigham Young University on Monday. Elder Carmack said that in six years the Perpetual Education Fund has made loans to 27,000 Latter-day Saint students in 39 countries.

Family Gathers to Repay PEF

Pioneer Handcart

In 1856, John Griffiths set out from Liverpool, England, with his family and headed to Salt Lake City in the Martin Handcart Company with the help of the Perpetual Emigration Fund. By the end of the journey, however, all but two of his children, Margaret Ann and Jane Ellenor, had died, and he died upon arriving in Salt Lake City. Now, 150 years later, descendants of these two pioneers gathered July 8 in Provo, Utah, to pay a unique tribute to their Martin Handcart Company ancestors—a settlement of a 150-year-old debt.
