King Herod was worried. The wise men said Jesus would be king. Herod did not want a new king. He wanted to be the only king. So he thought of a way to kill Jesus. He knew Jesus was a baby. He told his soldiers to kill all the babies in Bethlehem and the places nearby. Then Jesus would be killed.

An angel visited Joseph. He told Joseph to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt. Egypt is far from Bethlehem. Herod would not find Jesus in Egypt.

Joseph obeyed. He took Mary and Jesus to Egypt. They were in Egypt when Herod’s soldiers killed all the babies at Bethlehem.

Zacharias did not want John to be killed. He sent Elisabeth and John to the mountains. John would be safe there.

King Herod asked Zacharias where John was. Zacharias would not tell Herod.

King Herod sent his soldiers to kill Zacharias. They killed him near the altar in the temple.

Later King Herod died. Then an angel visited Joseph. He told Joseph to take Jesus and Mary home. Joseph took them to Nazareth. Jesus was safe there.
