Many people in Samaria heard the gospel. They believed the gospel and were baptized. But they did not have the Holy Ghost.

Peter and John went to Samaria. They put their hands on the people’s heads and gave them the Holy Ghost.

A man named Simon was in Samaria. He saw Peter and John give people the Holy Ghost. Simon knew Peter and John had power. They had the priesthood. The priesthood gave them power. Simon wanted the power of the priesthood.

Acts 8:9, 18–19

He asked them if he could buy the priesthood. Peter told Simon no one can buy the priesthood. God gives the priesthood to men. Only righteous men can have the priesthood. Peter knew Simon was not righteous. He told Simon to repent. Simon would not repent. He did not get the priesthood.
