Jesus told many stories. He told stories to teach people. The stories helped them learn the truth.

One day a leader of the Jews came to Jesus. The leader wanted to trick Jesus. He asked Jesus how to get into heaven. Jesus asked the leader what the scriptures said. The leader said a man should love God. He should also love his neighbor. Jesus said the leader was right. Then the leader asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbour?”

Jesus told the leader a story. A Jew was walking on a road. Some thieves stopped him. They took his clothes. They beat him. They left him on the road. He was almost dead.

Soon a Jewish priest came by. He saw the man who was hurt. The priest should have helped him. But he did not. The priest walked by on the other side of the road. He left the man alone.

Then another Jewish man came along the road. He worked in the temple. He saw the man who was hurt. He also should have helped him. But he did not. He walked by on the other side of the road. He left the man alone.

Then a Samaritan came along. The Samaritans were not Jews. The Jews and the Samaritans did not like each other. The Samaritan saw the man who was hurt. He knew the man was a Jew. But he felt sorry for him. The Samaritan took care of the man. The Samaritan put clothes on him.

The Samaritan took the Jew who was hurt to an inn. He took care of him until the next day. Then the Samaritan had to leave. He gave money to the man who owned the inn. He told him to take care of the hurt man.

This was the story Jesus told the leader of the Jews. Then Jesus asked which of the three men was the man’s neighbor.

The leader said the Samaritan was the neighbor because he helped. Then Jesus told the Jewish leader to be like the Samaritan.
