Zacharias was an Israelite. He lived near Jerusalem. His wife was Elisabeth. They obeyed God’s commandments. Zacharias and Elisabeth were old. They had no children. They prayed for a baby.

Zacharias was a priest. He worked in the temple. One day an angel named Gabriel came to him. Zacharias was afraid. Gabriel told him not to be afraid. Gabriel said God would bless Elisabeth and Zacharias. God would answer their prayer. Elisabeth would have a baby. Gabriel said they should name the baby John.

God had work for John to do. John would have the priesthood. He would tell people about Jesus Christ. John would be a righteous prophet of God.

Zacharias did not believe Gabriel. He said Elisabeth was too old to have a baby. Gabriel said God sent him to tell Zacharias it was true. Because Zacharias did not believe it, he would not be able to talk until John was born.
