After forty days the devil came to Jesus. The devil tempted Jesus three times. Three times he told Jesus to do bad things. First the devil told Jesus to change some rocks into bread. Jesus was hungry. He had power and could change rocks to bread. But he knew he should only use his power to help other people. So he did not do what the devil said. He did not change the rocks into bread. He obeyed God.

Matthew 4:2–4; JC, pp. 128–29

Then the Holy Ghost took Jesus to a high place on the temple. The devil came to Jesus again. He told Jesus to jump off the temple. The devil said angels would catch Jesus before he got hurt. The devil wanted Jesus to test Heavenly Father. He wanted Jesus to see if Heavenly Father would help him. But Jesus did not do what the devil said. Jesus did not jump. He would not test his Heavenly Father.

Matthew 4:5–7; JST, Matthew 4:5

Then the Holy Ghost took Jesus to the top of a mountain. The Holy Ghost showed Jesus all the kingdoms and money in the world. The devil came again. The devil said Jesus could have all the kingdoms and money if Jesus would obey him. Jesus said he would not obey the devil. Jesus said he would obey only his Heavenly Father. He told the devil to go away. The devil left Jesus. Then angels came and blessed Jesus. Now Jesus was ready to begin his work.

Matthew 4:8–11; JST, Matthew 4:8
