The Roman emperor made a law that everyone must pay taxes. Joseph and Mary lived in Nazareth. They had to go sixty-five miles to Bethlehem to pay their taxes. Luke 2:1–5

It was not easy for Mary to travel to Bethlehem. Her baby would soon be born. Luke 2:4–5

At last Joseph and Mary arrived in Bethlehem. All the rooms were already filled with people. Luke 2:6–7

When the Baby was born, Mary wrapped Him up and laid Him in a manger. Joseph and Mary named the baby Jesus. Luke 2:7, 21

There were shepherds taking care of their sheep in the fields near Bethlehem. That night an angel came to them. The shepherds were afraid. Luke 2:8–9

The angel told them to not be afraid, because he had wonderful news: The Savior, Jesus Christ, was born in Bethlehem. They would find Him lying in a manger. Luke 2:10–12

The shepherds went to Bethlehem, where they saw the Baby Jesus in a manger. Joseph and Mary were with Him. Luke 2:15–16

The shepherds were happy to have seen the Savior. When they left, they went and told other people about all they had heard and seen. Luke 2:17, 20
