Victor L. Brown Jr.
Narrow, self-centered obsession with perfection can become an emotional disability. Principle: We achieve perfection step by step through preparation, repeated practice, and adherence to the Savior’s example The Savior said, “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” (Matt. 5:48.) But perfection is difficult to achieve, and often takes a lifetime—or more—to attain.

“Out of Obscurity”
Neal A. Maxwell
See Acts 15:2.) Paul even noted his tendency to boast (see 2 Cor. 10:8, 13, 15; 2 Cor. 11:1, 16. 21; 2 Cor. 12:1), reminding us of the wisdom of yet another prophet who wrote: “I do not boast in my own strength, nor in my own wisdom; … “But I will boast of my God.” (Alma 26:11–12.) Only Jesus was perfect in all things, including love and meekness. Even the greatest of mortal prophets fall short of Christ’s high and perfect standards.

The Royal Law
Arthur R. Bassett
The epistle is a reminder that affliction, viewed in a positive light, can provide valuable experiences and steppingstones toward joy and perfection. “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into many afflictions.” (JST, James 1:2.) One of the major thrusts of this epistle centers in the need for the development of patience and self-control in our lives. James refers to a “royal law,” a fitting complement for Peter’s designation of the “royal priesthood.” Elsewhere in the epistle he refers to it as “the perfect law of liberty.” (James 1:25.) It is the law which embraces all other laws: “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” (Matt. 22:39.) Every transgression is a violation of the royal law.

Exhaustion Is Not a Prerequisite to Perfection
Cindy K. Peterson
Second Nephi 2:25 [2 Ne. 2:25] says, “Men are, that they might have joy.” Somehow I twisted that scripture in my mind to read, “Men and women are that they might be exhausted—and the more the better.” In striving to do everything and to perfect myself, I came to the erroneous conclusion that I had so much to accomplish that I couldn’t afford the luxury of rest. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that being rested is essential to having the energy necessary to reach perfection.

I Have a Question
Gerald N. Lund, curriculum writer for the Department of Seminaries and Institutes: We have been told many times that there is, in the life of Jesus, a model to which we can turn as we seek to mold and sculpt our own lives into works of perfection. Every moment of his recorded life inspires those who would bring themselves to that level of perfection marked out in the indelible chalk of Christ’s own life.

That “more” is expressed by Moroni: “And again, if ye by the grace of God are perfect in Christ, and deny not his power, then are ye sanctified in Christ by the grace of God, through the shedding of the blood of Christ, which is in the covenant of the Father unto the remission of your sins, that ye become holy, without spot” (Moro. 10:33; emphasis added).

Between Faith and Charity: Some Thoughts on Hope
Rebecca Gwynn Stradling
If they keep their covenants here and now and depart this life firm and true in the testimony of our blessed Lord, they shall come forth with an inheritance of eternal life. “We do not mean to say that those who die in the Lord, and who are true and faithful in this life, must be perfect in all things when they go into the next sphere of existence.
