Home Family Guidebook

Introduction

The family is the most important unit in time and eternity. God has established families to bring happiness to His children, to allow them to learn correct principles in a loving atmosphere, and to prepare them for eternal life.

This guidebook is designed for all families. It will help family members understand how they can return to God's presence and bless the lives of others. The guidebook does the following:

  1. Describes the structure of the family.
  2. Suggests ways in which parents can teach the gospel in the family, including family scripture study, family prayers, and family home evenings.
  3. Explains how families can fulfill their responsibilities to (1) provide for the spiritual and physical needs of themselves and others, (2) share the gospel with those around them, and (3) receive temple blessings themselves and provide these blessings for ancestors who have died.
  4. Explains how a family can hold Sunday worship services when authorized to do so.
  5. Provides procedures for priesthood ordinances.

As family members understand and use these principles, they will find happiness in this life and in the life to come. President David O. McKay said: "I know of no other place where happiness abides more securely than in the home. It is possible to make home a bit of heaven. Indeed, I picture heaven as a continuation of the ideal home" (in Conference Report, Apr. 1964, 5).
