Structure of the Family

The Lord has commanded His children to marry and establish families. Husbands and wives are to love one another with their whole hearts. Paul taught: "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it. . . . And the wife see that she reverence her husband" (Ephesians 5:25, 33).

President Gordon B. Hinckley described the relationship that should exist between husband and wife: "Marriage, in its truest sense, is a partnership of equals, with neither exercising dominion over the other, but rather, with each encouraging and assisting the other in whatever responsibilities and aspirations he or she may have" (Church News, 14 Mar. 1992, 11).

When children come into the family, parents are to love them, teach them the truths of the gospel, and be examples of righteous living. They are to provide for the material needs of their family. Their goal should be to prepare family members to return to live with Heavenly Father (see Moses 1:39).

Children are to honor and obey their parents. They are to learn and keep the commandments of God.

The father is to use the priesthood to bless and guide family members. If there is no father in the home or if the father does not hold the priesthood, the family may receive the blessings of the priesthood through the bishop or branch president, the quorum leaders, and the home teachers assigned to the family.
