Holding Family Worship Services

Some families in isolated areas cannot regularly attend ward or branch meetings. In such cases, priesthood leaders may give permission for a family to hold Sunday worship services in their home.

When there is a worthy priesthood holder in the family, he may prepare and bless the sacrament if his presiding priesthood leader gives permission. He must hold the office of priest in the Aaronic Priesthood or hold the Melchizedek Priesthood. Any worthy Aaronic or Melchizedek Priesthood holder may pass the sacrament.

Instructions for administering the sacrament are found under Priesthood Ordinances and Blessings.

A Sunday worship service should be simple, reverent, and dignified. It may consist of the following:

  1. Opening hymn
  2. Opening prayer
  3. Blessing and passing of the sacrament
  4. One or two of the following:
    • One or two short talks or testimonies
    • Scripture reading and discussion as a family
    • A lesson by a family member
  5. Closing hymn
  6. Closing prayer

The family should use the scriptures as their basic guide. They can also use the general conference reports, Gospel Fundamentals and Gospel Principles manuals, missionary pamphlets, Church magazines, and other Church publications and visual aids. Priesthood leaders can help families identify available materials.

When there is no priesthood holder in the family, a parent may gather family members together to sing hymns, study the scriptures, pray, and draw closer to each other and Heavenly Father. The presiding priesthood leader will work with the family to provide periodic opportunities for family members to receive the sacrament.
