Facts about the Memphis Tennessee Temple

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

What: The Memphis Tennessee Temple is the 80th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The temple has approximately 10,700 square feet of floor space and includes a celestial room, two endowment rooms seating 40 people in each room, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry. The exterior is Imperial Danby white marble. The spire is topped by a gold statue of the angel Moroni (Mo-RONE-eye).
Where: The temple is located in the Bartlett suburb of Memphis, Tennessee. Its mailing address is 4199 Kirby-Whitten Parkway, Bartlett, Tennessee 38135.
Why: The temple is considered a "house of the Lord" where the Savior's teachings are reaffirmed through marriage, baptism, and other sacred ordinances focusing on the eternal potential of family relationships.
When:

Plans for the temple were announced September 17, 1998, by the First Presidency of the Church. Groundbreaking services were held on January 23, 1999.

A public open house will be held Saturday, April 8, 2000 through Saturday, April 15, 2000, excluding Sunday, April 9, 2000. The temple will be formally dedicated Sunday, April 23, 2000.

Who: The temple will primarily serve more than 15,900 members of the Church in parts of Arkansas, Alabama, and Tennessee.
