Member Service Helped Prepare for Floods

By Walter Cooley, Church Magazines

While forecasters predict floodwaters on several Utah rivers will remain at or above flood stage over Memorial Day weekend, advance preparation by Church volunteers is helping areas affected by the flooding.

For three Saturdays earlier this spring, nearly 300 Church members prepared sandbags for potential flood areas throughout Utah. Volunteers from stakes in the Draper, Sandy, and Bountiful regions filled several truckloads with sandbags on April 30, May 7, and May 14. The Utah Bishops' Central Storehouse then distributed the truckloads to several Utah cities.

Throughout the year, many Utah cities have been preparing for heavy runoff and possible flooding due to higher than usual snow pack and rain totals following years of drought. The Church made the sandbags available in support of local and state agencies already working to prevent flood damage in areas likely to be affected.

While the Church has prepared sandbags in the past, this year' s effort surpassed that of recent years because of the potential for widespread flooding. The Utah Bishops' Central Storehouse acts as a support facility and distribution center for bishops' storehouses throughout the United States.
