BYU Education Week Reaches Thousands
By Walter Cooley, Church Magazines
Brigham Young University's upcoming Campus Education Week will reach 22,000 visitors attending the classes between August 15 and 19 in Provo, Utah, and tens of thousands through satellite, television, and Internet broadcasts later this fall.
The theme of the weeklong program is "The Prophet Joseph Smith: 'Whom I Did Call upon . . . to Bring Forth My Work' (D&C 136:37)."
About 100 of the week's 1,100 scheduled presentations will discuss the life and contributions of Joseph Smith. The annual event, which is in its 83rd year, also includes presentations by 200 university faculty members on subjects such as the standard works, gospel principles, marriage and family relations, self-improvement, finances, and youth-related topics.
First Counselor in the Presiding Bishopric, Bishop Richard C. Edgley, will be the keynote speaker during a devotional address on August 16.
Twelve sessions from Education Week will be broadcast in English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish to Canada and the United States between September 13 and 16. Eight sessions will be broadcast in English, Cantonese, French, Mandarin, Portuguese, and Spanish to Asia, Central and South America, Europe, the Pacific, and South Africa between September 9 and 10 and September 16 and 17.
Neil Carlile, director of BYU Education Week, said attending Education Week or watching the broadcasts is a significant educational opportunity.
"Rebroadcasts are a way the university feels it can make these educational resources available to thousands of people who couldn’t attend the program," said Brother Carlile.
This is the 10th year Education Week will be broadcast over the Church’s satellite network. Brother Carlile said viewers could expect an institute-classroom feel while watching the sessions.
"A viewer can be well-assured that this is good doctrine and good teaching," he said.
