Book of Mormon in Hiligaynon Completed
In October 2005 a new full edition of the Book of Mormon was published in Hiligaynon. Copies of the completed version of the book are available through local distribution centers and also through ward and branch leadership. The completed translation of the book makes it the 77th language to have a full translation of the Book of Mormon in print. Some of the other languages that have translations of selections of the book are in the process of receiving a full translation.
The First Presidency encourages Hiligaynon-speaking members to get their own copies of the scriptures for personal and family study as well as for use in Church meetings and responsibilities. “As members prayerfully learn and teach from the scriptures, their testimonies will grow, their knowledge will increase, their love of family and others will expand, their ability to serve others will enlarge, and they will receive greater strength to resist temptation and defend truth and righteousness,” the First Presidency stated in a letter to Hiligaynon-speaking members.
Hiligaynon is an Austronesian language that is spoken in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. The language is mostly used in the provinces of Iloilo and Negros Occidental. It is also used in other provinces of the Panay Island group. About seven million people worldwide are native Hiligaynon speakers.
