Funeral Service for Fallen Missionary

By Brittany Karford

President Gordon B. Hinckley expressed his sympathy to the parents of Elder Morgan Young at the missionary’s funeral service in Bountiful, Utah, Tuesday, reminding them that their son “could not have been engaged in a more worthy service.”

"I'm impressed with the thought that Elder Young has joined the ranks of a very select group who stand so very, very high in the estimate of God. There is some special place and some special work for them to do under our Father's plan," President Hinckley said at the funeral.

Elder Young was one of two missionaries shot last week while going door-to-door in a Chesapeake, Virginia neighborhood. His 19-year-old companion, Elder Joshua Heidbrink of Greeley, Colorado, survived. Elder Heidbrink, who was shot in the neck, attended the service with his left arm in a sling.

Hundreds came to pay their respects at the Bountiful 31st Ward chapel, where family members and his ward bishop honored Elder Young by recounting their fondest memories of him. His older brother, Brennan Young, spoke of Morgan's commitment to his mission, and Bishop Larry Kocherhans affirmed that Morgan was doing exactly what he was supposed to be doing.

In counsel given last week, Elder M. Russell Ballard stated that the mission field is still “the safest place in the world for 19-to-21-year-old men and 21-year-old young women.” Expressing condolences to those mourning the loss of not only Elder Young but the two missionaries who were killed in a car accident in New Zealand last week as well, Elder Ballard said: “The First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve extend our love to you, pray the Lord will bless you and that the peace of the Lord will ultimately come to your hearts.”

Elder Young had two months left before he was scheduled to come home. He was 21.
