Concert to Feature Various Performers

By Brittany Karford, Church Magazines

Three hundred and sixty voices, and then some, will share the stage with bells, bagpipes, and an orchestra tomorrow night in the Conference Center auditorium. The concert is open to the public.

The concert marks the first time the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the Orchestra at Temple Square, the Bells on Temple Square, and Wasatch & District Pipe Band will perform all together in one concert. The performance is in conjunction with the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Region IX convention. Convention participants will join in a portion of the performance.

“This is going to be a real treat for the convention chorale,” said Mike Huff, Utah ACDA president and a member of the Bountiful Utah South Stake. “I don’t think any of them have performed in a place that seats 21,000 people.”

Brother Huff said Craig Jessop, music director for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, has invited the convention attendees to join in singing “Battle Hymn of the Republic” at the end of the concert.

Those at the convention represent just one chapter of the ACDA, an association of more than one million nationwide. Brother Huff said Brother Jessop is a long-time member of the ACDA, one of 18,000 choral directors belonging to the association.

Scott Barrick, general manager of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, said the concert was outlined with professional choral directors in mind, “so the repertoire encompasses a wide variety.” That's why the performance will include songs from the choir’s 2005 Christmas concert.

The concert will feature Brother Jessop as director, Mack Wilberg as associate music director, Thomas Waldron as bell master, and Andrew Morrill as pipe major. It will be the first 2006 appearance for the Bells on Temple Square as well as some of the other performing groups.

Segments of the concert will include music of Christmas, music of the masters, music of our land and people, music of the world, and signature sounds of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The concert will take place Thursday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are free, but required. They can be obtained over the Internet, in person at the Conference Center ticket office (door 4), or by calling 570-0080 (locally) or toll-free 1-866-537-8457 (1-866-LDS-TIKS).
