Orchestra to Perform with Renowned Pianist in Conference Center
World-renowned pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk will join the Orchestra at Temple Square in its first-ever solo performance in the Conference Center“A Summer Concert” at 7:30 p.m. on June 10.
Gavrylyuk and the Orchestra will perform Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto no. 2 in C Minor, Dmitri Shostakovich's Festive Overture in A Major, and Peter Tchaikovsky's Symphony no. 4 in F Minor.
“To present one of Rachmaninoff's most beautiful compositions ever written for the piano with the formidable technique and sensitivity of an Alexander Gavrylyuk, and then to add the genius of Tchaikovsky with the energy of Shostakovich will make this evening an unforgettable musical experience,” said Igor Gruppman, conductor of the Orchestra at Temple Square, in a news release.
Since its formation in 1999 under the direction of President Gordon B. Hinckley, the 110-member, all-volunteer Orchestra at Temple Square has become a nationally recognized symphony orchestra. In addition to its seasonal concerts and accompaniment of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the Orchestra accompanies the Temple Square Chorale in its semiannual concerts and has provided the music for various Church productions, such as Savior of the World and the new Legacy Theatre film, Joseph Smith The Prophet of the Restoration.
The Orchestra's performance in the Conference Center will be the second of two concerts performed with Gavrylyuk. The first is the night before, Friday, June 9, at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah.
Gavrylyuk has won top awards at international piano competitions and has appeared at festivals and concert tours in the United States, Israel, Japan, Poland, Germany, Russia, Slovenia, Australia, Italy, and Canada, performing solo and with orchestras conducted by Sergerstam, Fedoseyev, and Ettinger. Born in 1984 in Kharkov, Ukraine, Gavrylyuk began studying piano when he was seven years old and performed his first concerto at nine years old.
In April 2005, Gavrylyuk won first prize, gold medal, and best performance of a classical concerto in the internationally renowned Arthur Rubenstein International Piano Master Competition.
“A Summer Concert” will be held in the Conference Center Auditorium. Tickets for Saturday's performance can be obtained on the Internet or by calling 801-570-0080. Tickets for Friday's performance at Snow College can be obtained by calling 435-283-7002.
