Ezra 2 gives the number of people who returned to Jerusalem under the leadership of a man named Zerubbabel, who was a descendant of the kings of Judah and who became governor of the land when the Jews returned. The people listed in this chapter were grouped according to the city they were from in Israel, and then according to family in that city. Ezra 2 also notes that the priests who returned were required to search their family history to prove they were Levites and could officiate in the priesthood.
